newsletter #4 | Welsh C2C, creative writing class & new writing group.
Off and anyway on a new adventure.
By the time this is published, I will likely be off on my Welsh coast to coast. I expect it to take roughly four weeks. My LEJOG attempt ultimately failed because I rushed it and burnt out, so I intend to take my time and just enjoy this one. That and I’m carrying various injuries so don’t want to push it.
I’m going to use it as an opportunity to drop off the radar and detox from the real world for a bit but feel free to follow me on Instagram or Twitter as I might post something every now and again.
In other updates, I finished my Creative Writing course at Cardiff University. It was really useful and helped cement a few techniques, as well as teach some new ones. I also joined a nature writing group. So far I have only attended one session but the people seem really nice and supportive so it’s something I’m keen to pursue.
Here is a roundup of things.
My Writing
Playground - A piece I wrote for a recent creative writing class. My hometown was a place I couldn't wait to get away from but still find myself lured back to in search of something I’m not sure what.
Wing Mechanics - Short blog piece I wrote while watching a red kite over our house. I’m fascinated by how they use their wings effortlessly.
Dying Embrace - Thoughts on old oak, torn up and left to rot after recent storms, and the ivy attached in a final embrace.

Other Interesting Links
Six Epic Walks Across Europe - Some aspirational long-distance walks across Europe. They all sound awesome, and I would like to get back to the Alps someday, but I have a few more walks I’d like to do not this list, time and money allowing.
How Trees Are Talking To Us - How to listen to trees and what sounds they make. This is a fascinating short article and link to a BBC Sounds program about the susurrations of trees, the quivering, rustling, whispering and rattling.
A Beginners Guide To Planting Trees - Guardian report on a couple of local (to us) tree planting initiatives.
Books I’ve Read & Enjoyed
Not really read many books this month.
The Pigeon Tunnel, John le Carré - Stories from John le Carré life as a former spy and writer. I’ve only read a few of his books but I was more interested in his life so this is a good collection of tales about his short career as a spy before becoming a writer.
The Descent of Man, Grayson Perry - A book that discusses the role of man in modern society. Topics include gender identity, masculinity, and body image. I believe in personal growth and always strive to change and improve so I was really interested in some of the themes that Grayson touches upon.
That’s it for now. Thanks for reading. Get outside, explore and stay safe. Till next time.
